If you experience neck and back pain you may have heard the term spinal subluxation, but you may not be aware of what it is or how damaging it can be. To help you further understand spinal subluxations, we would like to provide you with some additional information and how chiropractic care can help!
A subluxation is when a joint does not work as it should, either due to misalignment or to improper function. You can develop subluxations at any joint within your body, including your feet, shoulders, wrists, and knees. The spine is a common area where subluxations can occur. This is referred to as a spinal subluxation.
WHAT IS A SPINAL SUBLUXATION?
A spinal subluxation refers to a misaligned vertebrae in the spine. A misaligned vertebrae can reduce the effectiveness of nerve signals between the body and brain by putting pressure on the nerve roots within the spine. It can lead to imbalances in other areas of your body that rely on this vertebrae to function.
SYMPTOMS
A spinal subluxation that is not treated may begin to affect other aspects of your overall well being. In order to identify spinal subluxations and get treatment, you should be aware of the signs and symptoms. Subluxations can cause the following symptoms:
Headaches – Headaches are commonly caused by the buildup of pressure from a subluxation without relief. A tension headache usually appears without warning when this pressure builds upward.
A lack of mobility – Subluxations can cause muscle rigidity or inflexibility. An inability to move may make performing simple tasks more difficult.
Neck or back pain – this is the most obvious indication of spinal subluxations because the pain radiates through the back and neck. The severity of discomfort can vary widely, from mild to debilitating.
COMMON CAUSES
A spinal subluxation can result from any number of causes, but trauma is the most common. A major injury or accident falls under this category. Alternatively, micro-trauma caused by daily habits, such as sleeping on your stomach or arm, carrying a heavy bag on one side of your body, or spending an extended period of time looking at a computer, can cause subluxations. Stress is another common cause of subluxations. When someone feels stressed and anxious, tension can build in their bodies, particularly in their neck and upper back. Muscles can become tight from stress, which may lead to spinal subluxations.
TREATMENT
A chiropractor can be your best solution for spinal subluxation treatment. For minor cases, stretching, over-the-counter pain medication, rest, and cold compresses can provide relief.
