There is no better exercise than one that is so fun that it does not feel like work. You may not sweat as much as you would in a Spin class, but your favorite fall activities could be burning calories that you were not aware of. Check out these exercise ideas disguised as fun October events.
VISITING AN APPLE OR PUMPKIN FARM
It's a classic autumn activity to go apple and pumpkin picking. Some exercise ideas would be to take a brisk walk around the orchard before your apple picking or to do some light stretching before trying to lift a pumpkin. Just always remember to lift from the legs, not the back. Once you have a crate full of apples or a huge pumpkin, don’t be afraid to ask for help loading them into the car.
YARD WORK
During this time of the year, there will be loads of leaves to rake, and this is a quick way to burn calories. Try involving your kids in the fall chore of raking by jumping in the piles with them. It's a great workout! However, raking can be painful to your back because repetition works your muscles. It is important to stretch, pace yourself, and take breaks in order to avoid back pain. In the event of sharp pain, put the rake down and consider visiting your chiropractor.
START GARDENING
Autumn is a great time to get gardening, whether you're adding pops of color or getting ready for spring with plants that can withstand the cold. Keep moving and take breaks when planting, as we tend to hold the same position for a while when gardening. As long as you are getting out and moving, you are benefitting your body.
FAMILY RUNS
In winter, the air is simply too cold to enjoy a long run, so runners know that this is the perfect time to run outdoors. This Thanksgiving, burn calories by starting a family tradition of running a turkey trot or jogging around the neighborhood. You should always remember to stretch your calves, thighs, and hips before a run to avoid damaging your back.
