Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. It begins as a postural distortion and may become a permanent deformity if left untreated. If scoliosis goes untreated, it may interfere with your lungs, heart and many other vital organ function.
THREE CAUSES OF SCOLIOSIS
- Genetic predisposition
- Habitual behavior
- Idiopathic (unknown causes)
Regardless of the cause, early detection can be helpful for treating scoliosis.
SCOLIOSIS SYMPTOMS
Because scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, it is something that alert parents can notice on their own. Look for a high shoulder, low hip, uneven wear in your child’s shoes. Children with scoliosis often complain of back and leg pain, but most of the time this is dismissed as “growing pains.” It is important to pay attention for these symptoms and get your child checked in order to avoid the long-term issues that scoliosis can lead to.
A NATURAL APPROACH TO TREATING SCOLIOSIS
Chiropractic care can help with scoliosis, but it takes time to retrain the spine and the muscles surrounding the spine. This is done without drugs or surgery to retain your posture and remove the abnormal spinal curvature
If a child goes too long without treatment, a back brace may be needed to help straighten the spine.
Bring your child in so we can discuss your concerns and explore treatment possibilities.
FREQUENTLY ASKED SCOLIOSIS QUESTIONS
Isn’t a certain amount of sideways curvature normal?
Any type of sideways curvature is abnormal. From the back, your spine should appear straight. When scoliosis is present, there are usually two curves, which is why it is sometimes referred to as an S-curve. A primary curve in one direction and a compensatory curve in the opposite direction.
Isn’t scoliosis caused by a lack of calcium?
No. However, there are a growing number of people who believe uncorrected spinal damage from the birthing process may be involved.
Do heavy back-packs cause scoliosis?
Not necessarily, however this is a growing concern over backpack safety for children. Make sure your son or daughter use both shoulder straps on their back-packs so the weight is evenly distributed. Weigh their bag. Make sure it doesn’t exceed 10% -15% of their body weight.
What Our Patients Say
What to Expect
Relief Chiropractic Care
When patients come to us in pain, our top priority is to help relieve that pain so they can find comfort and feel better. While some patients feel relief in as little as one visit, it can take 2-3 visits per week for 4-12 weeks to achieve lasting real pain relief.
Corrective/Restorative Chiropractic Care
Muscles and tissues heal more completely during the corrective care phase, which prevents and reduces the risk of further injury. This phase typically requires 4-8 visits per month for 6-24 months depending on the severity of the issue.
Wellness Chiropractic Care
Once your body has completely healed, periodic adjustments become an important part of your healthcare regimen to avoid problems in the future. Based on your lifestyle and goals, we hope to see you 1-4 times per month.
