This year is different than any other and has completely changed how we live our day-to-day life, including the fact that many of us are now working from home. It is a big adjustment to go from working in an office every day to working in your living room. Whether you are still getting used to your at-home workspace or are loving WFH, these changes often lead to neck, back, and body pains. Here are our tips to help keep your spine healthy while working from home.
SET UP A COMFORTABLE WORKSTATION
When we say you should set up a comfortable station, we mean the couch! Sure, your couch may be comfortable, but it’s probably not ideal for eight hours of work each day. Just as you have an ergonomic workspace in the office, the same rules apply at home. Make sure you have enough space to work comfortably while sitting or standing at a table or desk. Whether seated or standing, your forearms should be parallel to the floor. If you are sitting down, you also want your thighs to be parallel to the floor. Your seat should offer adequate back support but if it doesn’t, a rolled-up towel can also provide lumbar support. Keep your screen at eye level and check in regularly with your posture.
STRETCH BREAKS
Sometimes your focus is so intense that you forget to get up and move your body. It’s important to give both your mind and body a break throughout the day. One way to make sure you get up and stretch is to set a timer for at least once an hour to get up, move around, and stretch your back and legs. This movement helps supply healing nutrients and fresh oxygen throughout your body which will not only make you feel better but can also help prevent injury.
