Football season looks a little different this year, but fans across the United States are rejoicing that it’s back. Whether you’re on the field playing your own game or stick to the sidelines, there are similarities to a healthy body. Some of the same things that keep players on the field longer will also make it easier for fans to watch for longer periods of time with more comfort. It all comes down to the joints and mobility. Here’s what you need to know.
JOINTS
Joints are where bones meet in the body. They have a piece of cartilage or fibrous material in the middle, have an enclosed capsule, and are full of synovial fluid allowing for smooth movement and nutrition to come to the structure.
MOBILITY
Different types of joints allow for different motions. The primary motion of the hip joint is extension/flexion, which is particularly important on the football field while running and while off the filed when seated or standing in the bleachers. The hip joint also rotates internally and externally. Rotation is consistently seen on the field as players are crouching, turning, pivoting, and twisting throughout the game. For fans, rotation is seen as you cheer or look back to catch a play while walking to the concession stand (or fridge!).
The main takeaway here is to keep plays and fans alike safe and comfortable. To help with hip mobility, spend five to ten minutes before the game doing any exercises that are moving through full range of motion in a squared-off position.
If you’re warming up for a game, start with hip rotations and air squats and go through the full range of motion without weight. If you’re sticking to the sidelines, get up frequently and move around. These movements help you have healthier joints, improve performance and endurance because movement encourages function, and decreases stiffness.
Another important step is to visit us at Wills Chiropractic. Regular chiropractic adjustments help restore and promote full and proper range of motion. Optimally functioning joints are important whether you’re on the field or off, and we can help.
CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Chiropractic adjustments benefit both football players and fans. The adjustment improves the player’s ability to perform at optimal levels, increases joint function, and can help heal from injuries and prevent them from happening in the first place. For fans, chiropractic can help with the effects of long periods of sitting, standing, and immobility on hard wooden or metal bleachers.
