The nervous system is important to everything we do. It controls every aspect of our life. Every function, cell, organ, tissue, and system in our body is run by the nervous system. This is something that differentiates us from other species on the planet.
There are 3 types of nerves in the nervous system. Motor nerves, sensory nerves, and autonomic nerves. The motor nerves control the actions of our body. The sensory nerves are what interpret our sense: touch, taste, smell, etc. The autonomic nerves control everything else from our breathing, to sleeping, to heartbeat and so on. Within the autonomic nervous system are two parts, the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic controls growth, rest, repair, digestion and more. Basically everything that makes us healthy. The sympathetic handles our stress response, basically what keeps you alive. You cannot have both the parasympathetic and sympathetic work at full capacity at the same time. When the sympathetic nervous system is overloaded with stress is shuts down the parasympathetic system’s ability to heal, get proper rest, and digest food properly.
Our job at Wills Chiropractic is to address the sympathetic nervous system to lower the stress response so that the parasympathetic nerves are able to function properly so our bodies can heal, rest, and function the way we are supposed to.
