You know that chiropractic care is a great tool for helping you feel better today and tomorrow—but do you know about the history of chiropractic? Its origins go back quite a ways, but the first recognized chiropractic adjustment happened less than 150 years ago. Let’s dive in, shall we?
The History of Chiropractic Care
THE ORIGINS OF CHIROPRACTIC
The idea of using manual manipulation to relieve pain and promote wellness has origins that go back thousands to China and Greece. The latter is especially fitting given that the word chiropractic is derived from Greek. Rev. Samuel H. Weed coined the term by combining the words for hand (cheiro) and action (praktikos).
While the origins of chiropractic may be thousands of years old, the first chiropractic adjustment took place in 1895. That was when Daniel David Palmer performed a treatment on a partially deaf janitor. According to the story, Harvey Lillard heard a pop in his back and subsequently lost his hearing. Palmer told Lillard to lie face down on the floor and performed an adjustment. The next day, the janitor told him that he could hear again.
CHIROPRACTIC BECOMES A PHENOMENON
Two years later, Palmer opened the world’s first chiropractic school in Davenport, IA. From those humble origins, chiropractic care has grown to become one of the more popular forms of care in history. There are around 20 chiropractic colleges in the United States alone, and the practice is used to help everyone from children to athletes at the top of their game to older adults looking to improve balance and mobility.
