Thanksgiving is just a day away and it is a holiday focused on gratitude and lots of food! It can also mean added stress, overindulgence, and overeating. This Thanksgiving, the team at Wills Chiropractic wants all of our patients to be happy and healthy throughout the season. Here are our tips for a healthy Thanksgiving holiday!

DON’T FAST BEFORE YOUR FEAST

Some people think fasting will “save up” calories to consume later on in the day, but it often leads to overeating. Start the day with a healthy, well-rounded breakfast when you wake up to curb your appetite later on. Snack on fruits and vegetables throughout the day instead of rich dips and appetizers and remember — it’s all about balance!

DRINK UP!

Drinking plenty of water is important for a healthy body at any time of the year, but especially with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Additionally, water is an appetite suppressant and being properly hydrated will help keep you from sneaking in extra bites of pumpkin pie throughout the day.

TAKE YOUR TIME

It takes about 20 minutes for the brain to recognize that the stomach is full. To prevent yourself from overeating during this time, pace yourself throughout your meal. This also helps you to truly savor and enjoy your food!

ENJOY A THANKSGIVING STROLL

You might feel like curling up on the couch after all that turkey, but going for a walk can help jumpstart your digestive system. It’s also important for the health of your spine and can prevent back pain to get up and get moving. Get your friends and family together after eating and enjoy a walk around the neighborhood. This light exercise will also help burn some of the calories you’ve just consumed and can help relieve stomach aches you might be feeling if you’ve overeaten.
