The new year is officially here and with it comes a fresh start…but for those suffering from back pain, the new year signifies more time suffering! If you are seeking back pain relief, here are our New Year’s resolutions to relieve back pain.

RESOLUTION 1: IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE

Sitting, standing, and even sleeping should all be done with proper posture as it can help protect your spine and maintain its health. Poor posture puts unnecessary pressure on your back and can cause spinal misalignments. To prevent back pain from improper posture, avoid slouching, hunching your shoulders, or bending sideways while standing.

RESOLUTION 2: EXERCISE

Exercise isn’t just about losing weight. When you strengthen your core muscles, you can help reduce chronic back pain and the risk of back injuries. If you aren’t already working out, make a resolution to exercise at least two times per week. Focus on building strength in your back and abdominal muscles. This resolution should also include moving more in general. If you sit at a desk all day long, make sure you get up and stretch regularly. EAT FOR YOUR SPINE

A diet that is high in vitamin D and calcium and full of antioxidants can help strengthen your spine. Deficiencies in both vitamin D and calcium can lead to health problems, such as osteoporosis, which is a common cause of back pain for older women. Additionally, a diet that is full of nutrient-rich foods can help your body (and spine) heal faster, which can relieve pain.
