You know that part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is exercise. Well, an important aspect of exercise that is often overlooked is stretching. Stretching is free, requires no special equipment or expensive gear, and will leave you feeling great! If you take the time to do anything for yourself, be sure to take the time to stretch.
Stretching allows for easier movement, increases flexibility, and improves balance. It can also help reduce soreness and stiffness, relieve low back pain, improve posture, agility, and even athletic performance. Stretching is also known to reduce tension, promote relaxation, improve circulation, reduce fatigue and stress, and decrease the risk of injury all while making you feel better naturally
STRETCHING TIPS
Stretching regularly helps condition your muscles for exercise, which allows them to function more efficiently. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while stretching:
- Static stretches should be done when your muscles are already warm and to close out exercise. Before you begin an exercise routine, practice dynamic movements like arm circles, weightless squats, and jumping jacks to engage the muscles you will be working.
- When you are stretching, don’t bounce or bob. Simply holding the stretch is effective and moving around while stretching could lead to injury.
- Each stretch should be performed in a slow, controlled manner and held for at least 30 seconds.
- Stretches should be just slightly uncomfortable. You should feel the stretch in your muscle and not your joints, so be mindful while stretching. If you feel pain while stretching, stop the movement and be sure to mention it during your next regularly scheduled adjustment.
- Stretch both sides of your body evenly and in the same way (to the best of your ability).
