Our bodies need movement and most of us know how important it is to exercise, but during the holiday season, it can be hard to make working out a priority. If you are having a hard time sticking to your exercise routine, why not start with incorporating more stretching? Stretching is an important and often overlooked exercise and it has many benefits including improving balance, increasing flexibility, and allowing for easier movement.
If you start stretching regularly, you may find you are less sore and stiff, have improved posture, and low back pain is relieved. Stretching can even improve circulation, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and reduce fatigue and stress (something we could all use during the holiday season). Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you start your stretching routine.
STRETCHING TIPS
- Stretching is an opportunity to take time for yourself, so don’t rush through it. Enjoy the time to focus just on yourself and lean in to each movement.
- Listen to your body and be gentle with it. Don’t immediately push into a deep stretch without first warming up your muscles.
- Relax and breathe. Take a big inhale and as you push into the stretch, exhale.
- If you are having a hard time connecting the mind and muscles, visualize each muscle group as you stretch and watch them elongate in your mind.
- Stretching shouldn’t hurt, but as you get into deeper stretches you will certainly feel it. If you are feeling any pain. Stop and evaluate your movement.
