Think about the last time you walked into a room at just about any location, whether it be here at Wills Chiropractic, the store, work, or school. We know you may have been staying home so things are a little different, but for the most part, just about everywhere almost every person in the room is looking down at their cell phone. Spending so much time in that position certainly has consequences and text neck is very real.
As we continue social distancing, it means we are spending more time than ever on our phones and that position can cause problems for your neck and back. Since we’re not likely to give up our phones, here are our tips to help prevent text neck.
LIFT YOUR DEVICE
It really is this simple: the bent neck position you’re in while looking down at your phone can cause a lot of problems. To alleviate these issues, just lift your device up to eye level. It might feel silly at first, but you’ll be protecting the health of your neck and spine. If you don’t want to lift your device up, keep it low but avoid bending your neck and look only with your eyes, not by putting your entire head down. Another option is to rest your neck while on your device. Use a pillow, headrest, or even a wall instead of bending down for hours out of the day.
LIMIT YOUR TIME
Speaking of hours out of the day – limit your time! Putting a time limit on how long you can spend on your device can help protect your neck. Try setting an alarm so you know how much time has passed. When you’re aware of how much of your day you spend on your phone, you may end up rethinking your activities. If time limits don’t work for you, try other “rules” like only allowing yourself to spend extended periods of time on your phone if you can also rest your head. These limitations can go a long way for your health.
CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Regular chiropractic care can help improve and maintain the health of your spine and neck. Our experienced chiropractors are trained to find and fix misalignments of the spine, which often leads to a reduction in pain, stress, and tension along the spine. This may not prevent text neck, but it can help catch such issues early on and treat them. Regular chiropractic adjustments are an excellent tool to boost your health and help on your journey to a healthy spine and body.
