It seems like no matter where you turn, there is a new update on the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and canned goods are flying off the shelves along with other essential items. This may seem stressful, but keep in mind that there are steps you can take to avoid getting sick in the first place. Here are our tips to help you stay healthy from illnesses including coronavirus, the flu, and even the common cold.
WASH YOUR HANDS
Handwashing is an excellent way to prevent illness. Simply washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can protect you from getting sick. Be sure to wash your hands after using the restroom, before eating a meal, and after you’ve been in a public place where people are actively spreading germs through surfaces like door handles, credit card machines, grocery carts, and more. Be particularly mindful not to touch your face when out in public so prevent yourself from exposure to germs.
EAT A HEALTHY DIET
We encourage you to eat a healthy diet year-round, but particularly when your immune system needs a boost. A healthy immune system actually gets its start in your gut and a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lean protein will help maintain the balance between good and bad gut bacteria. As you evaluate how you eat, it’s also a great time to reduce sugar intake, as it can throw off your gut bacteria balance. You always will want to stay hydrated and it can’t hurt to increase your Vitamin C and Vitamin D consumption.
SLEEP WELL
When you are feeling stressed out and anxious, a good night’s sleep seems impossible. However, if you don’t get a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep each night, you are doing your body (and immune system) a disservice. When you sleep is when your body rests and rejuvenates, so sleep is critical to your health and wellness.
If you are having issues falling asleep, check in on your sleep environment. Is your room cool, quiet, and dark? What about your nighttime routine. Try to avoid caffeine in the afternoon and make sure that your electronics are turned off at least an hour before sleep to better prepare your body for sleep. The blue light coming from your device combined with a constant stream of pandemic-related information is no way to settle in for the night!
