Halloween is almost here and that means carving pumpkins, scary movies, and lots of tricks and treats. While just about all of us love the delicious candy that comes with Halloween, we don’t necessarily love how it makes our bodies feel or the weight gain it may cause. As we get ready to head into the holiday season, managing a balanced lifestyle can be more challenging. Here are our tips to help you enjoy a healthy and happy Halloween.  

MAKE YOUR OWN TASTY TREATS  

The only way to know what you are consuming is to make it yourself. Treats bought at the store are usually loaded with preservatives, empty calories, and sugars that do nothing to benefit your health. If you get creative (time to log in to Pinterest!), you can make your own Halloween and seasonal treats with fewer calories and healthier ingredients. If you have kids, cooking and baking together is an activity that is so much fun, it’s scary!  

SET LIMITS FOR YOURSELF  

For most of us, skipping Halloween candy just isn’t going to happen…and that’s okay! Life is all about balance, and that includes indulging from time to time. Try to set a limit on how much candy you and your family can consume so you enjoy the treat without overdoing it. A few suggestions are to allow a set amount of days or weeks that candy is kept or to freeze leftover candy so it is consumed more slowly.  

GET IN THE SPOOKY SPIRIT  

Candy is a big part of Halloween, but there’s more to it than that! If you want to celebrate the holiday but also maintain your health goals, focus on other elements. Put all your creative juices into your costume and decorate your home with all sorts of ghouls and goblins. Carve some pumpkins while watching a scary movie marathon – sometimes it’s not about the candy as much as it is about the feeling that comes with a day for fright and fun!
