Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. For many of us, Thanksgiving travel is inevitable, but don't let your spine suffer. Try our travel tips paired with chiropractic adjustments to help.

CONSIDER CHIROPRACTIC CARE

It is not uncommon to experience back pain when traveling due to the constant sitting and general lack of movement. Especially if you plan to spend a lot of time in a car, on a bus, or a plane, since the body requires moving, stretching, and overall activity, sitting for long periods can cause stiffness, vertebral restrictions, and eventually pain. Though frequent breaks and exercise certainly help, a chiropractor is your best bet for long-term wellness.

You can prepare your body for travel stress with regular chiropractic adjustments. Travel can present many challenges, from traffic to running to your gate, hauling heavy luggage, and sitting for hours in an uncomfortable chair. You can avoid these challenges by getting chiropractic care each week.

TRAVEL BY AIR

Keep your carry-on bags light and compact if you are planning to travel by air this year. If you are taking a trip that lasts longer than a day, it will always require luggage. In addition to hauling your bag across the airport, you may have to lift it over your head for compartment storage. As a result, it puts a lot of strain on your back, shoulders, and arms. Pack as lightly as possible, no matter where or how you are traveling. As you travel, distribute the weight equally and switch arms while carrying the bag.

During your flight, it's best to remain in your seat, but you can still stretch. Try foot lifts to keep your circulation moving — start by rocking your feet back onto the heels, and then push forward onto your toes. Propping your feet up on a bag, massaging your legs, and remaining hydrated will also help.

TRAVEL BY CAR

Prepare your back for a successful drive by using back support. You can also keep your limbs moving by rolling your shoulders forward and back and working your thighs and calves by tightening and relaxing them. Plan stops along the way to take a walk, and be sure to stop if you become tired to rest.
